Cybersecurity for Lawyers, Accountants, Other Professionals—Understanding Your Risks and Obligations

Cyber attackers have caught on that law firms and other professional services organizations hold some of the most confidential and valuable data out there, but that these organizations often fail to understand or implement the cybersecurity practices necessary to protect themselves. Because of this trend, data security needs to be taken seriously by lawyers and other professionals. This program will cover the current cybersecurity risks that could threaten professional services businesses; address their legal obligations to provide data security; and provide a framework for achieving cyber preparedness.
About the Speakers

John Ghose is a Partner in the Atlanta office of Freeman Mathis & Gary and is Co-Chair of the firm’s Data Security, Privacy & Technology practice group. Mr. Ghose is also a member of the Commercial and Complex Litigation practice group.
Prior to joining FMG, Mr. Ghose was a cybercrime prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice for nearly 10 years—most recently at the Computer Crimes and Intellectual Property Section (CCIPS) in Washington, DC, and before that at the U.S. Attorney’s Offices in Atlanta and Philadelphia. Mr. Ghose is a subject matter expert on cryptocurrency and dark web investigations who has taught widely on these subjects, both domestically and abroad. He has extensive experience investigating and prosecuting data breaches, ransomware attacks, insider threats, business email compromise, and cyber-enabled money laundering. Mr. Ghose understands the technical aspects and legal ramifications of cyber attacks and is uniquely qualified to advise on ways to prevent, prepare for, and respond to them.

Elizabeth Lowery is a Partner in Freeman Mathis & Gary's Hermosa Beach and downtown Los Angeles offices. She is a trial lawyer with a nationwide practice focusing on financial institutions and professionals. As a former trader and CPA, she brings a unique and exceptionally strong financial background to an array of commercial litigation.
Ms. Lowery has extensive experience in all aspects of financial and investment services including internal investigations, SEC and FINRA investigations and litigation, regulatory licensing, expungement, fraud claims, breach of fiduciary duty, unfair business practices and professional negligence. Her clients include accountants, attorneys, financial institutions, brokerage firms, stock and commodity brokers, certified financial planners, as well as insurance agents. In addition, Ms. Lowery has assisted many clients in navigating through inquiries, investigations, disciplinary actions by FINRA, the SEC, the Certified Financial Planning Board, and California’s Department of Insurance and Board of Accountancy.

Dana Maine is a founding attorney of FMG and is a member of the Firm's Executive Committee. She is a highly experienced trial lawyer who has tried over several cases to verdict including multiple high exposure jury trials throughout Georgia. She is a member of the Professional Liability Section of the Defense Research Institute and serves on its leadership committee. She also has appeared before the United States Supreme Court.
Ms. Maine is Chair of the Professional Liability Attorney Network (PLAN), a national association of select law firms with significant professional liability practices. She also serves on the leadership committee for the Professional Liability Committee within the Defense Research Institute. A graduate of Agnes Scott College (B.A.), Ms. Maine received her law degree from Emory University (J.D.), where she was a member of the Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal. She is a graduate of the Atlanta Regional Commissioner's Leadership Institute and is active in other civic and professional organizations in metro Atlanta.
